From the hall to the sand

What indoor players have to relearn on sand

The skills are the same, but a few rules cut straight across habits from indoor volleyball. The numbers come from the FIVB beach rulebook.

  • The block counts: after a block touch only two hits remain. Beach rule 14.4.1
  • No open-hand tips. If you play the ball over the net with your fingers, they must be rigid and held together. Beach rule 13.2.3
  • An overhand pass that goes over the net must travel perpendicular to the line of your shoulders, unless you were setting your partner. Beach rule 13.2.5
  • On the first hit, several contacts in a row are allowed only if you don't play the ball overhand with your fingers. Beach rule 9.2.2.2
  • No centre line: you may enter the opponents' court as long as you don't interfere with their play. Beach rule 11.2.1
  • Five seconds instead of eight to serve, and you switch sides every seven points. Beach rules 12.4.4, 18.2.1
  • Nobody coaches you: at FIVB events there is no outside help during the match. Beach rule 4.1.4
  • The ball is bigger and much softer: 0.175 to 0.225 kg/cm² instead of 0.30 to 0.325. Beach rule 3.1

The block counts

On the beach a block touch is the first of three hits Beach rule 14.4.1. Indoors it does not count Rule 14.4.1.

No open-hand tips

A soft tip with open fingers is fine indoors Rule 13.1.2, but a fault on the beach Beach rule 13.2.3.

Less time to serve

Five seconds after the whistle on the beach, eight indoors Rule 12.4.4.

Two more formats

Snow volleyball and sitting volleyball

Snow volleyballThree against three, plus one substitute, on a 16 × 8 m court of snow that is at least 30 cm deep at FIVB events. Sets go to 15, two won sets win the match, and teams switch sides every five points. Unlike on the beach, a block touch does not count as a team hit. Players wear shoes with a good grip and long, tight trousers, and gloves are allowed3.
Sitting volleyballSix players on a 10 × 6 m court, with the net at 1.15 m for men and 1.05 m for women and the attack line 2 m from the centre line. When playing the ball, some part of the body between buttocks and shoulders must touch the floor, with short exceptions in defence; standing up or taking steps is not allowed. The serve may be blocked and attacked, and a time-out lasts 60 seconds4.

The snow rulebook on fivb.com is the 2021–2024 edition; there was no newer one when we checked on 21 October 2026.
